The Quotes That Defined Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones has ended its reign with the series finale on Sunday. Between 2011 and 2019, the incredible show has earned 314 wins and 505 award nominations. The show is one of the most complex and addictive shows ever been made. Fans obsess over the dense story line, intricate clues, foreshadowing, warnings, wisdom and thought-provoking revelations. Before saying goodbye, let’s revisit some of the most critical moments in the show defined by memorable quotes and dialogues.

HBO

“The things I do for love.” — Jaime Lannister as he pushed Bran Stark out of the window. This action created a spiraled conflict between the Starks and Lannisters from beginning to end.

“There’s a war coming, Ned. I don’t know when, I don’t know who we’ll be fighting...but it’s coming.” — Robert Baratheon

“When you play a game of thrones you win or you die.” — Cersei to Ned Stark

"Bran and Rickon are captives in Winterfell. Sansa and Arya are captives in King's Landing. I have five children, and only one of them is free." — Catelyn Stark

HBO

“I did warn you to not trust me.” — Littlefinger to Ned Stark as he sold Ned out to the Lannisters

“Swift as a deer. Quiet as a Shadow. Fear cuts deeper than swords.” — Arya Stark

“A lion does not concern himself with the opinion of sheep.” — Tywin Lannister

“You know nothing, Jon Snow.” — Ygritte

“He is a monster.” — Sansa Stark to Olenna Tyrell and Joffrey's soon-to-be wife, Margaery Tyrell. Sansa’s honesty resulted in Joffrey’s death as Olenna decided that she could not marry her granddaughter to someone so evil.

“I am not your little princess. I am Daenerys Stormborn of the blood of old Valyria and I will take what is mine, with fire and blood I will take it.” — Daenerys

“If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.” — Ramsay Bolton to Theon Greyjoy

HBO

“The Lannisters send their regards.” — Jaime Lannister told Roose Bolton and he later repeated those exact words as he killed Robb Stark at the infamous Red Wedding massacre.

“They can live in my new world, or they can die in their old one.” — Daenerys

“Lannister, Targaryen, Baratheon, Stark, Tyrell... they're all just spokes on a wheel. This one's on top, then that one's on top, and on and on it spins, crushing those on the ground.” — Daenerys

“I will not stop the wheel. I will break the wheel.” — Daenerys

“I choose violence.” — Cersei to Lancel in the Red Keep not too long before she destroyed the Sceptor and became Queen of the Seven Kingdoms

"A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell. And I'm going home." — Arya

”I am Sansa Stark of Winterfell. This is my home. And you can’t frighten me.” — Sansa to Miranda, Ramsay Bolton’s partner in crime.

“You’re going to die tomorrow, Lord Bolton. Sleep well.” — Sansa Stark

HBO

“We have to trust each other. We can’t fight a war amongst ourselves. We have so many enemies now.” — Jon to Sansa

“You have to be smarter than father. You have to be smarter than Robb. I love them and I miss them but they made stupid mistakes and they both lost their heads for it.” — Sansa to Jon Snow as she warns him of what happened to honorable men and men who do stupid things for love.

“The last thing you're ever going to see is a Stark smiling down at you as you die.” — Arya

“Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe.” — Arya to House Frey before ending them.

“When people asked you what happened here, tell them the North remembers. Winter came for House Frey.” —  Arya after avenging her mother’s and brother’s death by killing Walder Frey and everyone involved in the Red Wedding massacre.

“You’re good at this you know. At ruling. They respect you.” — Sansa to Jon Snow proving she trusts and loves her brother.

"Sometimes when I'm trying to understand a person's motives, I play a little game. I assume the worst." — Sansa quoted Petyr Baelish himself before having Arya kill him.

“I’m a slow learner, it’s true. But I learn.” — Sansa Stark proves she will always side with family and she’s not vulnerable to manipulation.

“You’re the strongest person I know.” — Sansa to Arya validating their family bond.

“When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives.” — Ned Stark taught Arya that family sticks together in the first season. In the seventh season, Sansa repeated this same sentiment as Sansa and Arya remembered their father and perhaps, reminded themselves that Starks stick together and with no one else.

”I warned you. Northerners don’t much trust outsiders.” — Jon to Daenerys when they arrive at Winterfell

“Duty is the death of love.” — Tyrion to Jon

“Everywhere she goes, evil men die and we cheer her for it. And she grows more sure that she is good and right.” — Tyrion reminded Jon Snow that killing and burning people is not new to Daenerys and she has been given respect and rewarded for her ruthlessness

“You are my queen. Now and always.” — Jon Snow to Daenerys choosing duty over love

“Why did you think I came all this way.” — Bran accepted the nomination to be King of the Six Kingdoms

“The North will remain an independent kingdom, as it has for thousands of years.” — Sansa to Bran as she’s protecting the Stark’s legacy and reclaiming the Northerner’s freedom.

HBO

“You were exactly where you were supposed to be.” — Bran to Jon, when his cousin apologizes for not being with him when he needed him most. This is the last spoken line in the series and it explains Jon’s fate and destiny.

When Bran was injured, Jon had to be with the Night’s Watch in order to encounter the Night King and his dead army. Without Jon, there would not be anyone rallying the realm against the army of the dead. Through his treacherous journey, Jon earned respect and love from the Night’s Watch and the free folks beyond the wall. To send Jon back to the Night’s Watch is to send him home. Bran aka the Three Eyed Raven knows Jon prefers to be free amongst the people who adore him. In a way, Jon becomes The King Beyond The Wall.

Whether you liked the finale or not, Game of Thrones is one of the most magnificent shows ever made. Every episode is a captivating movie experience. But as Varys said, “Nothing lasts.”
